On Tuesday, the Supreme Court declared Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, a crucial aspect of the landmark civil rights law, unconstitutional. In The Root, LDF’s Sherrilyn Ifill critiques the Court’s decision to knock down the most important protection that Black voters and other voters of color have to combat discrimination at the polls in the parts of America with the deepest and most entrenched histories of voting discrimination. Ms. Ifill discusses the radical act the Court has taken in issuing this decision, as well as the various steps forward for voters of color to combat disfranchisement.
