NAACP LDF Statement on the Dissolution of the Pence-Kobach Voter Commission

Today, President Donald Trump dissolved his so-called President Advisory Commission on Election Integrity. The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) President and Director-Counsel Sherrilyn Ifill issued the following statement in response:

"Every aspect of this Commission, whose formation was based on the race-baiting premise that Latino and African-American voters engage in voter fraud, was an affront to the integrity of our elections. The Commission was led and populated by some of the most virulent proponents of the odious myth of voter fraud. It lacked any semblance of ideological balance.  The voting rights community was completely excluded from the Commission and its work. The Commission’s meetings and the development of its work plan lacked the most basic transparency expected in a functioning democracy and its mission attempted to supplant the authority to investigate election matters that Congress has delegated to the Election Assistance Commission. In every way, this Commission was itself a fraud and a sham.

"While we are gratified that the Commission has been disbanded, we remain concerned that the very threat we anticipated in our lawsuit may have already been set in motion. The President’s statement issued tonight indicates his intention to ask the Department of Homeland Security to examine the issues undertaken by the Commission. In our lawsuit, LDF v. Trump, we warned that the Commission intended to undertake a comparison of state voter files to the databases maintained by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This kind of comparison process has already been discredited by experts as racially discriminatory and inaccurate. Thus, we are examining options to challenge any actions by DHS which may have the purpose or effect of targeting minority voters. We will also seek the return of all information provided to the Commission by states and the full removal of this information from databases held at the White House or by Commission members."
