Many hope the federal government will succeed in obtaining an indictment of New York police officers where Staten Island prosecutors failed.
From the New York Times:
“We have relied over the course of our history on the federal government to step in where the states have been unable or unwilling to ensure justice,” said Christina Swarns, Director of Litigation of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
She said that she hoped the federal government would be able to take action “because I think it will be enormously dispiriting to African-Americans and other people across the country to believe that someone could be choked to death in broad daylight by the police for selling cigarettes without any consequences.”
