In the wake of the Supreme Court’s review of Shelby County v. Holder, a case challenging the constitutionality of the Voting Rights Act, the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) has launched an oral history project in which viewers are asked to share their memories about the passage of the Act and how it changed their lives or communities. Even those not old enough to remember passage of the Act are encouraged to share how the Voting Rights Act has affected their community. Viewers have only 3 minutes to share their story. PBS will share the audio files on its website and other social media sites, and may use portions of some stories on its NewsHour broadcast. For now, the focus is on collecting and archiving stories about the effect of one of the most important pieces of legislations enacted during the Civil Rights Movement.
