Yesterday, Texas Lawyer published an article reporting on the confirmation of judicial nominee J. Campbell Barker to the Eastern District of Texas. NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) Director of Policy Lisa Cylar Barrett was quoted in the piece saying, “Barker’s record is … rife with efforts to thwart racial justice, including defending Texas’ discriminatory voter ID law and the racially biased death sentence of Duane Buck.”
LDF was lead counsel in Buck v. Davis, where the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated Duane Buck’s death sentence because of the influence of racial bias. In an opinion authored by Chief Justice John Roberts, the Court reaffirmed the longstanding principle that “[o]ur law punishes people for what they do, not who they are.”
