From Selma, Alabama, NAACP LDF Special Counsel Debo Adegbile appears on CNN to explain how the Voting Rights Act remains a necessary tool to remedy over a century of voting discrimination, and “captures what is best in America”—the ability of all to participate in the political process.
The U.S. Supreme Court is currently considering Shelby County, Alabama v. Holder, a case in which Shelby County challenges Section 5 of the Voting Rights.
Section 5, the heart of the Act, requires certain states and localities with the worst histories of persistent and adaptive voting discrimination to obtain approval from the Department of Justice or a federal court for any proposed changes in voting law.
LDF represents six African-American voters in the case; Mr. Adegbile presented oral argument to the Supreme Court in defense of the Voting Rights Act on February 27.
