In response to the Supreme Court’s Tuesday decision striking a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, LDF President and Director-Counsel Sherrilyn Ifill calls on American citizens and the congress to restore the “crown jewel” of the civil rights movement. Writing in Politico, Ms. Ifill highlights the damage the Court’s decision has done to our nations march towards justice. Noting that the Court acted “with an embarrassingly misplaced sense of its own superior ability to understand the realities of race, voting and political participation in communities throughout this country,” she writes: “Now, the ball is back in Congress’ court. But the ball isn’t just in Congress’ court now, it’s in our court as American citizens. The question is whether we are prepared to protect our nation’s 50-year legacy of fair access to voting, or are we ready to let it go. The only way Congress will act to repair this breach is if we, the people, demand it.”
