LDF Assistant Counsel Ria Tabacco Mar appeared in front of New York’s City Hall in support of the Stop Credit Discrimination in Employment Act, which would ban the use of credit checks in employment.  “Poor credit is more often the result of hardships, not personal irresponsibility, and blacks are more likely to face the kind of hardships – like medical bills, unemployment, and divorce – that lead to credit problems than whites,” she said.  “Employers are simply not allowed to select workers based on litmus tests, like credit checks, that are more likely to screen out workers of one race, and have nothing to do with choosing a qualified applicant.”

Last year, LDF’s Director of Economic Justice ReNika Moore testified before the Committee on Civil Rights in support of the bill.
