The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) expresses its deepest and sincerest condolences to the family and colleagues of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who passed away today at the age of 79. Justice Scalia was the longest-serving member of the current Court and served for almost thirty years under Chief Justices Rehnquist and Roberts. Our thoughts and sympathy are with the Justices and the clerks and staff with whom he served.
We urge President Obama to nominate a qualified replacement for Justice Scalia as soon as practicable. Thereafter, we expect that the Senate will fulfill its constitutional obligation to review the qualifications of the nominee and to confirm the nominee without delay.
