The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (“LDF”) sent a letter to Madison County Board of Registrars Chairman Lynda Hairston today about a variety of troubling issues with voter registration at the historically Black Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (“Alabama A&M”) and Oakwood University. Due to conversations with students involved in helping with voter registration efforts and reports in the press, LDF has identified three major areas of concern, which we outline in full here.
We urge Hairston’s office to act swiftly to resolve these issues and to comply with federal law, which requires them to eliminate discriminatory or arbitrary restrictions on the right to vote.
