As the Senate holds a confirmation hearing of Pamela “Pam” Jo Bondi for Attorney General of the United States, the Legal Defense Fund (LDF) today is releasing a comprehensive report detailing her troubling record on civil rights and voting rights, her blind allegiance to President-elect Trump, and her efforts to undermine the integrity of the election system – matters that make her unfit to be Attorney General.

LDF President and Director-Counsel Janai Nelson issued the following statement:

“The Attorney General of the U.S. is responsible for defending the rights and liberties of all Americans. Through her words and her actions, Pam Bondi has shown she is wholly unfit to fulfill these non-negotiable obligations, as our report makes clear. During her time as Florida’s Attorney General, Bondi spearheaded policies that disenfranchised millions of voters, especially Black voters and other voters of color. These efforts to restrict voting rights, along with her baseless claims of election fraud, undermine the very foundation of our democracy. In addition, Bondi’s concerning positions and policies on immigration, education, and law enforcement, as well as her attacks on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility programs, raise serious doubts about her ability to uphold the principles of equality and justice that are fundamental to the role of Attorney General.”

“Equally alarming is Bondi’s staunch loyalty to President-elect Trump, which she has demonstrated through public threats against his political opponents, her role in perpetuating false claims about the 2020 election being stolen, and her previous work as Trump’s personal lawyer. Such extreme fealty and partisanship are incompatible with the impartiality and independence that is required of the nation’s top law enforcement officer.

“The Department of Justice is a critical pillar of the rule of law in our democracy, charged with upholding civil rights and ensuring equal protection under the law. Pam Bondi’s record, rife with hostility toward these principles, disqualifies her from leading this important institution. We urge the Senate to reject her nomination.”
