Today, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) joined fourteen other civil rights, consumer protection, and industry leaders in issuing a statement condemning the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC)’s newly announced changes to rules that enforce the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). The changes weaken the OCC’s commitment to the CRA, which was enacted to address deep-rooted racial discrimination in U.S. housing policies and credit access. The effects of these changes will be exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic which has been hardest on lower-income communities and communities of color.

Founded in 1940, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) is the nation’s first civil and human rights law organization. LDF has been completely separate from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) since 1957—although LDF was originally founded by the NAACP and shares its commitment to equal rights. LDF’s Thurgood Marshall Institute is a multi-disciplinary and collaborative hub within LDF that launches targeted campaigns and undertakes innovative research to shape the civil rights narrative.
