Yesterday, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) joined a coalition of civil rights organizations, organized by the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, in sending letters to U.S. Attorney General William P. Barr demanding an independent investigation of the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) and Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) officers involved in the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor to determine whether the officers violated civil rights in violation of federal criminal laws. The letters also request that the Department of Justice (DOJ) initiate pattern or practice investigations into the MPD and LMPD.

In addition to these investigations, the coalition urges the DOJ to restore its commitment to investigating and addressing systemic policing problems nationally.
