Today, LDF and voting and civil rights organizations within the New York Voting Rights Coalition sent a letter to Governor Hochul, Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins and Speaker Heastie in support of the enactment of S657/A885, which would be a critical complement and foundation for the NYVRA’s protections. The letter also thanks the Governor for providing $2.6 million to the Attorney General’s office for enforcement of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act of NY in the Executive Budget. The letter encourages both chambers of the New York State Legislature to fully fund both S657/A885 ($2.4 million and, following the Governor’s lead, the NYVRA’s preclearance provisions ($2.6 million).

Founded in 1940, the Legal Defense Fund (LDF) is the nation’s first civil rights law organization. LDF’s Thurgood Marshall Institute is a multi-disciplinary and collaborative hub within LDF that launches targeted campaigns and undertakes innovative research to shape the civil rights narrative. In media attributions, please refer to us as the Legal Defense Fund or LDF. Please note that LDF has been completely separate from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) since 1957—although LDF was originally founded by the NAACP and shares its commitment to equal rights.
