Melanie Roussell Newman is Chief Communications Officer at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. Ms. Newman is overseeing the expansion of our communications department and is responsible for shaping communications strategy across all LDF practice areas and the Thurgood Marshall Institute.
Prior to LDF, Ms. Newman held several positions in the Obama Administration, most recently serving as Director of the Office of Public Affairs (OPA) at the U.S. Department of Justice, where she led the Department’s communications team and oversaw messaging and public engagement strategy for Attorney General Loretta Lynch. Prior to joining the Justice Department, Ms. Newman served as Associate Director of Communications and Strategic Planning at the White House Office of Management and Budget and Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Her experience also includes stints as the National Press Secretary at the Democratic National Committee and Communications Director for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary.
Ms. Newman is a New Orleans, Louisiana native, but spent part of her childhood in Selma and Tuskegee, Alabama. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida and her Master’s degree in Public Communication from American University in Washington.
