Celina Avalos joins the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) as a Trainer for the Prepared to Vote and Voting Rights Defender Project. She graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a major in Political Science and was the recipient of the Chancellor’s Service Award for outstanding leadership and community service to the UCLA community.
During her time in college, Celina served as a policy fellow with the UCLA Latino Policy & Politics Initiative working to find effective policy solutions to advance the lives of the most marginalized communities on issues varying from housing, criminal justice, immigration, health care, and voting rights.
Celina also served as a legislative intern in the office of US Senator Kamala Harris and as the Co-Director of the BruinsVOTE! Coalition at UCLA. In this role, Celina spearheaded civic and voter engagement efforts across campus resulting in a 45% increase of in-person voter turnout and assisted with the creation of Assembly Bill 963 — the Civic and Voter Empowerment Act — that was signed into law by California Governor Gavin Newsom in 2019.
Prior to joining LDF, Celina launched her own non-profit in her community with a group of friends called Eastern Coachella Valley for Change striving to provide a mentorship program to at-promise high school students and direct-services that focus on higher education, leadership development, and civic engagement.
