The NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) is the country’s first and foremost civil and human rights law organization. Founded in 1940 under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall, who subsequently became the first Black U.S. Supreme Court Justice, LDF was launched at a time when the nation’s aspirations for equality and due process of law were stifled by widespread state-sponsored racial inequality. From that era to the present, LDF’s mission has been transformative–to achieve racial justice, equality, and an inclusive society.

LDF’s litigation, policy advocacy, organizing, and public education programs in the substantive areas of criminal justice, economic justice, education and political participation seek to ensure the fundamental and basic human rights of all people to quality education, economic opportunity, the right to vote and fully participate in democracy, and the right to a fair and just judicial system.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Strategic Initiatives Manager (SIM) will support priority projects and leadership deliverables of the COO across a wide range of areas including strategic plan, governance, organizational development, and operations. The SIM will work closely with the COO, serving as a sounding board, resource, and accountability partner.  The SIM will exercise discretion, confidentiality, and independent judgement, reporting regularly to the COO with progress, challenges, and recommendations.

As of March 7, 2022, LDF transitioned to a hybrid work environment. Any candidate selected for this position should be prepared to work in the office location assigned at least two days per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Directly assist COO with the identification, management and execution of emerging priority initiatives and special projects (current examples include: a comprehensive cataloging and updating of organizational policies, leveraging the department’s full use of board management platform and document management platform, and developing team-wide success metrics and data-driven updates);
  • Stay abreast of emerging operational trends and serve as a thought partner to the COO on best practices and innovations in a wide range of operational areas, including organizational development and culture, productivity tools and processes, and governance support;
  • Help the COO to track accountability on projects and commitments, and help keep her reports accountable to their key deliverables and results;
  • Assist in planning and executing COO’s team planning sessions, retreats, and review meetings;
  • Support COO with board and committee meeting preparations and minutes; and
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; higher degree a plus;
  • Five+ years’ experience in operations or related role;
  • Commitment to the racial justice mission of LDF;
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to triage and re-prioritize as needed;
  • Keen research and analytical skills;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Agile in a fast-paced, hybrid working environment;
  • Adept with current productivity technologies including Microsoft Suite, project management tools, and asynchronous collaboration tools; and
  • Trustworthy with sensitive and confidential information.
