The NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) is the country’s first and foremost civil and human rights law organization. Founded in 1940 under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall, who subsequently became the first Black U.S. Supreme Court Justice, LDF was launched at a time when the nation’s aspirations for equality and due process of law were stifled by widespread state-sponsored racial inequality. From that era to the present, LDF’s mission has been transformative–to achieve racial justice, equality, and an inclusive society.

LDF’s litigation, policy advocacy, organizing, and public education programs in the substantive areas of criminal justice, economic justice, education and political participation seek to ensure the fundamental and basic human rights of all people to quality education, economic opportunity, the right to vote and fully participate in democracy, and the right to a fair and just judicial system.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Risk and Compliance Officer will play a vital role in ensuring that LDF operations are compliant with federal, state, and local regulations, particularly in the areas of lobbying, charitable solicitation, business licensing, employment, and employee benefits.  The Risk and Compliance Officer will also monitor organizational risks, monitor compliance with internal policies, and serve as a subject-matter risk and compliance advisor to departments across the organization.

To achieve this, the Risk and Compliance Officer will interpret relevant regulatory requirements, policies, and processes; determine required actions; coordinate others to meet requirements and deadlines; and document the diligence with which tasks are performed. The Risk and Compliance Officer will exercise discretion, confidentiality, and independent judgement, reporting regularly to the COO with progress, challenges, and recommendations.

As of March 7, 2022, LDF transitioned to a hybrid work environment. Any candidate selected for this position should be prepared to work in the office location assigned at least two days per week.


  • Serve as subject-matter expert on federal, state, and local laws and regulations regarding lobbying, charitable solicitation, business licensing, employment, employee benefits, and other regulatory compliance matters affecting non-profits;
  • Build strong relationships and a positive communication flow with colleagues across multiple departments, including Litigation, Policy, General Counsel, Human Resources, Finance, Communications, and Development;
  • Develop and deliver compliance and risk management trainings and workshops for staff;
  • Track and manage registration and reporting requirements by jurisdiction;
  • Create processes, schedules, and templates to facilitate on-time and complete compliance registrations and filings;
  • Ensure quality control by reviewing compliance registrations and filings prior to submission;
  • Liaise with outside counsel and vendors so that LDF stays up to date with compliance requirements and makes use of appropriate services such as state registration management and OFAC screening;
  • Identify key organizational risks and develop and monitor a risk management dashboard;
  • Advise on risk management, liability, and insurance matters;
  • Monitor compliance with internal policies and agreements and recommend mitigating actions;
  • Monitor new regulatory developments and update LDF policies and processes as needed; and
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree required; higher degree a plus;
  • Three+ years’ experience in compliance, risk, or related field; lobbying compliance strongly preferred;
  • Commitment to the racial justice mission of LDF;
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to triage and re-prioritize as needed;
  • Keen research and analytical skills;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Agile in a fast-paced, hybrid working environment;
  • Adept with current productivity technologies including Microsoft Suite, project management tools, and asynchronous collaboration tools; and
  • Trustworthy with sensitive and confidential information.
