The NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) is the country’s first and foremost civil and human rights law organization. Founded in 1940 under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall, who subsequently became the first Black U.S. Supreme Court Justice, LDF was launched at a time when the nation’s aspirations for equality and due process of law were stifled by widespread state-sponsored racial inequality. From that era to the present, LDF’s mission has been transformative — to achieve racial justice, equality, and an inclusive society.

LDF’s litigation, public policy advocacy and public education programs in the substantive areas of criminal justice, economic justice, education and political participation seek to ensure the fundamental and basic human rights of all people to quality education, economic opportunity, the right to vote and fully participate in democracy, and the right to a fair and just judicial system.

LDF seeks an experienced Graphic Designer to provide the visual creative for all our communication products and branding. We are seeking candidates with an artistic eye and the technical expertise to help further develop LDF’s online, digital and print communications. The Graphic Designer will report to the Director of Communications and the Manager of Creative and Digital Strategy. S/he will have the opportunity to help reshape LDF’s digital and branding presence at a time when LDF’s work to advance racial justice is as important as ever.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide graphic content for all LDF and communications produced in-house, including digital and print materials, social media accounts and website;
  • Maintain LDF standards for all visual design;
  • Establish a content management system (templates, modules, etc.) to allow easy uploading of daily content with web design firm;
  • Develops concept and the “look” of LDF’s products, including use of photos, graphics, color schemes, and designs, both use in print and online;
  • Manage creative objective, approach, and budget and scheduling parameters for graphic design products;
  • Execute the design and layout of all materials produced by the Communications Department, or as required by other departments. Review and make recommendations regarding new technologies or software upgrades which will enhance this work;
  • Manage all print jobs, including layout and design, review of proofs, and relationships with printers and other vendors;
  • Maintain a dialogue with LDF attorneys and departments to provide support and produce materials as needed for institutional advancement. This includes, but is not limited to research reports, brochures, letterhead, invitations, programs, manuals, booklets, annual reports, promotional materials, and other collateral materials as needed for internal use, conferences, meetings and other events;
  • Work with the Archives Department to use historic images and content for LDF platforms; and
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • Minimum of five years of relevant work experience in graphic design;
  • Knowledge and experience with Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign;
  • Knowledge of HTML, CSS, content management systems and website technology;
  • Experience with audio/visual production, and website edits/design is preferred;
  • Creative thinker, attention to detail;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Excellent technical and verbal communication skills;
  • Good organizational skills in managing and prioritizing multiple projects;
  • Ability to work with a wide range of people and to work fast and effectively on deadlines;
  • Ability to analyze, organize and integrate information clearly, quickly and consistently;
  • Professional, cooperative attitude and demeanor; and
  • Commitment to civil and human rights.
