The NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) is the country’s first and foremost civil and human rights law organization. Founded in 1940 under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall, who subsequently became the first Black U.S. Supreme Court Justice, LDF was launched at a time when the nation’s aspirations for equality and due process of law were stifled by widespread state-sponsored racial inequality. From that era to the present, LDF’s mission has been transformative — to achieve racial justice, equality, and an inclusive society.

LDF’s litigation, public policy advocacy and public education programs in the substantive areas of criminal justice, economic justice, education and political participation seek to ensure the fundamental and basic human rights of all people to quality education, economic opportunity, the right to vote and fully participate in democracy, and the right to a fair and just judicial system.

LDF’s Police Accountability efforts leverages research, public education, policy and legislative advocacy, litigation, community organizing, and communications strategies to advance reforms at the local, state, and national levels. The main strategies include:

  • Utilize litigation to eliminate racially discriminatory policing and policies;
  • Advocate for national annual reporting of use-of-force and traffic and pedestrian stops data disaggregated by race ethnicity, and gender with recommendations on how to eliminate racial disparities;
  • Promote and realize the expanded role of prosecutors in eliminating racial bias in the criminal justice system, and the appointment of special prosecutors to investigate police misconduct and excessive use of force;
  • Link federal funding to data collection and training;
  • Advocate for attaching conditions to federal funding to law enforcement agencies and train communities on how to file Title VI complaints against police departments;
  • Support demands for federal civil rights investigations;
  • Support local communities’ demand for federal civil rights investigations of police departments to address long-standing racially-discriminatory policing practices in certain cities and counties;
  • Advocate for police body-worn camera programs that protect privacy rights and do not exacerbate racial disparities in law enforcement;
  • Demilitarize police forces and limit the role of police in schools;
  • Create governance structures that allow African Americans and other persons of color to participate in decisions relating to policing;
  • Build capacity for grassroots organizing

The Communications Associate – Police Accountability (CA-PA) will be a member of the Editorial division, while also contributing to the Digital and Media divisions. The CA-PA reports to LDF’s Editorial Director and will work very closely with all members of the Communications Department and the Police Accountability team within the Policy Department.



  • Develop communication strategies to amplify LDF’s Police Accountability work;
  • Draft press releases, media advisories, and press pitches;
  • Draft talking points and messaging on policing;
  • Draft op-eds to national and local publications;
  • Develop proactive, journalistic content on issues related to policing;
  • Provide rapid-response support on issue related to policing incidents across the country.


  • Work with the Digital Division to recommend social media content as it relates to policing;
  • Update the Digital Division on activities related to policing.

Other Duties

  • Participate in all related Police Accountability team meetings;
  • Serve as a member of the Editorial Division of the Communications Department;

  • Commitment to LDF’s mission and a record of engagement with issues of racial justice, with an emphasis on policing;
  • Bachelor’s degree in either communications, political science, journalism or pre-law or policy related field;
  • Minimum of 3 years of written and digital communications experience, preferably with a non-profit organization or entity;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups that help to drive LDF’s mission;
  • Experience working in digital media, including drafting and disseminating social media content;
  • Knowledge and familiarity with a range of social and economic justice issues and comfort level promoting its ideals;
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and analytic tools, including Sprout Social;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including a commitment to teamwork and ability to collaborate with diverse groups;
  • Demonstrated ability to work both in a team structure and independently, as required by different circumstances;
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously and in a timely manner;
  • Ability to work well under pressure with attention to detail;
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to a flexible and sometimes demanding schedule.
