Today the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (“LDF”) is filing an amicus curiae (“friend of the court”) brief [2] in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin, urging the U.S. Supreme Court to preserve diversity and opportunity in America’s colleges and universities.
A wide range of over 70 amici briefs were filed supporting diversity in Fisher. These included the United States [3], student organizations [4], 444 prominent social scientists [5], leading empirical scholars [6], the Anti-Defamation League [7], and a large number of colleges and universities ranging from public flagship schools (e.g., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill [8]) to eight Catholic universities [9] (e.g., Fordham, Georgetown, Notre Dame) and 37 private liberal arts colleges [10] (e.g., Amherst, Oberlin, Wesleyan). Dozens of additional significant briefs were also filed later, including briefs from high-ranking retired military officials [11], leading corporations [12], small business owners [13], 17 U.S. Senators [14], National League of Cities [15], states [16] (e.g., California [17]), religious denominations [18], labor unions [19], the College Board [20], and civil and human rights organizations (e.g., MALDEF and other Latino organizations [21], Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund [22], Asian American Center for Advancing Justice [23],National Women's Law Center [24], Leadership Conference for Civil and Human Rights [25], ACLU [26] and the American Jewish Committee [27]).
