The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (LDF) is the country’s first and foremost civil and human rights law organization. Founded in 1940 under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall, who subsequently became the first African-American U.S. Supreme Court Justice, LDF was launched at a time when the nation’s aspirations for equality and due process of law were stifled by widespread state-sponsored racial inequality. From that era to the present, LDF’s mission has always been transformative: to achieve racial justice, equality, and an inclusive society.
LDF’s litigation, public policy advocacy and public education programs in the areas of criminal justice, economic justice, education and political participation seek to ensure the fundamental and basic human rights of all people to quality education, economic opportunity, the right to vote and fully participate in democracy, and the right to a fair and just judicial system.
LDF seeks a Director of Development to conceptualize, organize and implement a comprehensive, strategic fundraising program to support the organization’s work. It is expected that the Director of Development will increase the organization’s support from individuals, corporations and foundations and play a key role in identifying, cultivating and soliciting major donors for annual and planned gifts.
The Director of the Development will be a key member of LDF’s senior management team and will report to the President and Director-Counsel. The Director of Development will supervise a team of professionals to include: Manager of Individual Giving, Manager of Special Events, Annual Giving Manager and support personnel. The Director of Development will work from LDF’s headquarters, located in New York.
The ideal candidate will bring knowledge of modern methodologies and an overall knowledge of fundraising to the LDF fundraising department. S/he must have experience working with high level donors, have a proven fundraising track record and be passionate about the LDF mission.
