Reflections of Former President and Director-Counsel Ted Shaw on the Legacy of Jack Greenberg

10/15/16

Jack Greenberg"Jack Greenberg was an American hero. If all he had done was serve in the navy during WWII, he would have earned that status. But his greatest battle was against our country’s greatest evil – racial segregation and discrimination. Jack was part of the team of lawyers that changed America forever. As one of the lawyers who argued the Brown cases, he cemented his place in history. But as Thurgood Marshall’s hand-selected successor, he led the Legal Defense Fund during the tumultuous years of the Civil Rights Movement and beyond. Although he is best known for his work on behalf of African Americans, he played a key role in advocating for women, Latinos, Asian Americans, and Native Americans. His reach extended to South Africa, the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Jack was a human rights pioneer."

"I was blessed to know Jack as a teacher, a boss, a mentor, and a friend. It will always be one of the great honors of my life to have known him. Now he belongs to the ages."
