Confirmation of DeVos Shameful Dereliction of Duty
Statement of NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. on Confirmation of Betsy DeVos
On news that the Senate confirmed the nomination of Betsy DeVos to be Secretary of Education, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. Director of Policy Todd A. Cox issued the following statement:
“In confirming Betsy DeVos, 50 senators and Vice President Mike Pence with a historic tie-breaking vote, were shamefully derelict in their constitutional duty of advice and consent, which is not a rubber stamp for nominees, especially a nominee like Ms. DeVos. She demonstrated a breathtaking dearth of qualifications to lead the Department of Education. From her lack of understanding of and commitment to basic education policy and legal obligations under critical federal civil rights laws, she demonstrated time and again that she was not fit to serve as Secretary of Education. By confirming her today, these 50 Senators and Vice President Mike Pence told the American people that playing partisan politics is more important than the educational future of millions of American children.”
Founded in 1940, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) is the nation’s first civil and human rights law organization and has been completely separate from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) since 1957—although LDF was originally founded by the NAACP and shares its commitment to equal rights. LDF’s Thurgood Marshall Institute is a multi-disciplinary and collaborative hub within LDF that launches targeted campaigns and undertakes innovative research to shape the civil rights narrative.
