The first appellate brief he worked on was for Bobby Seale, one of the "Chicago 7" defendants accused of inciting riots at the Chicago Democratic convention in 1968. Schnapper was a lawyer for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund from 1969 until 1994, when he moved out to the University of Washington in Seattle.
