The Power of Now
Today, Baltimore County State’s Attorney Scott Shellenberger announced that his office would not seek criminal charges against the police officers responsible for the August 1 shooting that killed Korryn Gaines and injured her young son, Kodi. In a letter to the Baltimore County Police Department (BCoPD), Shellenberger wrote that “based upon all of the circumstances, it is determined that this shooting was justified and the State will take no further action.” The BCoPD had alleged that Ms. Gaines threatened the officers, which led them to open fire after a nearly seven-hour standoff.
Today, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) sent a letter to Kevin Kamenetz, Baltimore County Police Department (BCoPD) Executive, to request that several key aspects of the police department’s practices be subject to an independent review following the police-involved shooting death of Korryn Gaines on August 1, 2016.
