LDF Statement on Agreement Reached by Justice Department and City of Cleveland to Reform Cleveland Division of Police5/26/15
The NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc. (“LDF”) is encouraged by the agreement announced today by the Department of Justice (“DOJ”) and the City of Cleveland on plans to reform the Cleveland Division of Police following the DOJ’s finding of a pattern or practice of excessive force. The court-enforceable agreement requires the Division of Police to adopt a number of reforms including de-escalation techniques; bias-free principles for policing; and improved officer training.
The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (“LDF”) applauds the decision made by a Baltimore grand jury to indict the six police officers charged in connection with the death of Freddie Gray.
LDF Submits Statement to the United States House Judiciary Committee Hearing on "Policing Strategies for the 21st Century"5/22/15
On May 19, LDF submitted a statement containing recommendations on police strategies for the House Judiciary Committee hearing on "Policing Strategies for the 21st Century," to address the waning public trust in the police (mostly within communities of color).
On May 20th, LDF President and Director-Counsel Sherrilyn Ifill gave New York University's 183rd Commencement speech at Yankee Stadium in front of an audience of approximately 8,000 people. Ms. Ifill also received a Doctor of Laws degree, honoris causa, at the ceremony, along with Lang Lang, internationally renowened pianist, Peter D. Lax, Abel Prize-winning mathematician and Graca Simbine Machel, political leader and humanitarian, amongst others.
