Legal Defense Fund Boosts Grants in Law Student Scholarship Program

Today the United States Supreme Court reaffirmed the right of job seekers to be free of discrimination in hiring. Declaring that “[a]n employer may not make an applicant’s religious practice, confirmed or otherwise, a factor in [an] employment decision,” the Supreme Court rejected apparel chain Abercrombie & Fitch’s claim that it had the right to deny employment to an otherwise qualified Muslim applicant because she wore a hijab. In this case, EEOC v. Abercrombie & Fitch, Abercrombie & Fitch claimed that the head scarf violated its dress code.

LDF Statement on Agreement Reached by Justice Department and City of Cleveland to Reform Cleveland Division of Police5/26/15
The NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc. (“LDF”) is encouraged by the agreement announced today by the Department of Justice (“DOJ”) and the City of Cleveland on plans to reform the Cleveland Division of Police following the DOJ’s finding of a pattern or practice of excessive force. The court-enforceable agreement requires the Division of Police to adopt a number of reforms including de-escalation techniques; bias-free principles for policing; and improved officer training.
