In the aftermath of the tragic death of Michael Brown, LDF and Dignity in Schools call for an end to criminalization of youth. LDF is a federal liaison for the Dignity in Schools Campaign (DSC) an umbrella for 84 organizations from 22 states dedicated to reforming overly punitive discipline practices that disproportionately push students of color out of school and into the juvenile justice system.
Youth, parents, educators and advocates from the Dignity in Schools Campaign have come together in response to the tragedy in Ferguson, Missouri on August 9, 2014.
One Day After the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and Other Civil Rights Groups Criticize Militarized Response in Ferguson, Governor Jay Nixon Suspends Curfew8/18/14
(New York, NY)—Just 24 hours after the ACLU, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law jointly issued a statement criticizing the curfew in Ferguson, Missouri as unconstitutional and calling for a de-escalation of the militarized response to civil unrest, Gov. Jay Nixon has suspended the city's curfew.
"What, since Sunday, has been done to give the community confidence that justice will be done?" Ifill asked on MSNBC's "The Daily Rundown with Chuck Todd" the morning of August 18th.
"The unrest you see here is the frustration in the absence of leadership, the absence of accountability," Ifill said. "Those leaders need to come forward, stand before the people who elected them, and be accountable: explain what they expect to happen, explain the timetable, explain what their intentions are."
