Schnapper began his legal career, not in employment law but in civil rights. The first appellate brief he worked on was for Bobby Seale, one of the "Chicago 7" defendants accused of inciting riots at the Chicago Democratic convention in 1968. Schnapper was a lawyer for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund from 1969 until 1994, when he moved out to the University of Washington in Seattle.
