On March 3, 2014, LDF sent a letter to Edward FitzGerald, the County Executive of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, Jeannet Wright, Acting County Treasurer, and the members of the Cuyahoga County council urging them to make changes to Cuyahoga County’s property tax lien sales system. Tax lien sales are used by many jurisdictions across the country as a means to collect delinquent property taxes, and each jurisdiction applies this system differently. The NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) congratulated Judge Andre Davis of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit as he steps down from active service today.
Judge Davis is the first and only African American to represent Maryland on the Fourth Circuit, which includes Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and the Carolinas.
It is with great sadness that LDF mourns the passing of Chokwe Lumumba, the mayor of Jackson, Mississippi. Mayor Lumumba was a revered civil rights lawyer, a human rights activist, and, as the co-founder of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, a true revolutionary. He devoted himself completely to principles of freedom and self-determination for black people.
