Section 5 protects the rights of voters of color who live in places with the worst and most persistent history of voting discrimination.
Just hours after the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Shelby County, Alabama v. Holder, LDF Director-Counsel Sherrilyn Ifill debated the ongoing need for Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act with the Heritage Foundation's Han van Spakovsky on PBS' News Hour. The discussion was moderated by PBS host Judy Woodruff.
Once again, race is front and center at the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday. And once again, the bull's eye is the 1965 Voting Rights Act, widely viewed as the most effective and successful civil rights legislation in American history. Upheld five times by the court, the law now appears to be on life support.
