The Power of Now
On May 20th, LDF President and Director-Counsel Sherrilyn Ifill gave New York University's 183rd Commencement speech at Yankee Stadium in front of an audience of approximately 8,000 people. Ms. Ifill also received a Doctor of Laws degree, honoris causa, at the ceremony, along with Lang Lang, internationally renowened pianist, Peter D. Lax, Abel Prize-winning mathematician and Graca Simbine Machel, political leader and humanitarian, amongst others.
The NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc. (“LDF”) is encouraged by the initiatives announced today by President Obama to improve the deeply frayed relationship between police and communities of color. The announcement includes the Law Enforcement Equipment Working Group Report, the final report by the President’s Task Force on 21St Century Policing and accompanying initiatives and plans for their implementation.
With episodes of police violence against unarmed African-American citizens occurring at a frequency that has raised the national consciousness to an unprecedented level, the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) and The Executive Leadership Council (ELC) have jointly called for immediate reforms to end police misconduct.
