In Letter to DOJ, LDF Urges Immediate Action to End Police Violence Against Unarmed African Americans8/14/14
(New York, NY)--In a letter sent to the Department of Justice today, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. called on Attorney General Eric Holder to take immediate action to address the unjustified use of lethal and excessive force against unarmed African Americans by police forces throughout the country.
LDF today commended President Obama for ordering an investigation into the killing of Michael Brown, an unarmed teenager shot to death by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri earlier this week. LDF also commends the President for urging Missouri Governor Jay Nixon to create a plan for addressing the state's response to protests in the wake of Mr. Brown's death.
Last night on MSNBC's The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell, Sherrilyn Ifill lambasted Missouri officials for their silence, absence, and lack of political leadership in Ferguson. Forty minutes later, Gov. Jay Nixon announced he would not go to the state fair and instead travel to Ferguson today.

(Beaufort, SC) — Yesterday, the Burton-Dale-Beaufort Branch of the NAACP strongly urged the Beaufort City Council to end the current discriminatory at-large based system of voting and put up for voter referendum a district-based voting map that will ensure that all of Beaufort's residents have an equal say in the political process.
