Alexis Hoag

Senior Counsel

Alexis Hoag joined the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) in October 2017. Prior to LDF, Alexis served eight years as an Assistant Federal Public Defender in the Capital Habeas Unit of the Federal Public Defender for the Middle District of Tennessee where she represented death sentenced individuals in their federal habeas proceedings. While there she developed a study to analyze the extent that race played in the selection of jurors in state capital trials. Alexis also served as the president of the Nashville chapter of the American Constitution Society and was a board member of the ACLU-TN. Previously, Alexis clerked for The Honorable John T. Nixon of the United State District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee.

Alexis received her J.D. from New York University School of Law, where she was a student attorney at the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem and the Legal Aid Society, Juvenile Rights Division, and was the recipient of the Dean John Sexton Prize for outstanding service to the Law School community. She graduated with distinction from Yale College with a B.A. in American Studies. Alexis is a member of the New York and Tennessee state bars.
